Why Choose This Coin?
About Uncirculated (AU) coins offer excellent detail, strong eye appeal, and a touch of original luster—without the higher cost of a full BU example. For collectors and investors, this grade represents an ideal balance of condition, value, and historical significance. With nearly a full ounce of gold, this piece is not only a stunning display of American artistry but also a strong portfolio asset.
Historical Significance
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was introduced as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to transform U.S. coinage into true national art. Coins struck in 1907-1908 did not include the motto "In God We Trust"—a feature added shortly after. In 1912, the number of stars around Lady Liberty was updated from 46 to 48 to reflect the admission of New Mexico and Arizona as U.S. states. Production of this coin ended in 1933, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Gold Reserve Act required Americans to return most gold coinage to the U.S. Treasury for melting, making surviving Double Eagles increasingly rare.
